About

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Stream Management Program (SMP) in Kingston funds and supports four reservoir-basin stream teams in the Catskill and Delaware Watersheds. SMP’s core goal is to restore stream stability and ecosystem integrity by partnering for the long-term stewardship of regional streams and floodplains.

Recognizing that healthy streams and rivers are vital to NYC’s water, NYCDEP and four (4) county Soil and Water Conservation Districts (Greene, Delaware, Ulster, Sullivan), later joined by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster, began a formal partnership in 1996. They assessed stream corridors and local concerns, then published Stream Management Plans with community‑led, science‑based recommendations and demonstration restoration projects.

The SMP continues to provide education for both general and technical audiences, technical help for landowners and towns, grant programs, stream and floodplain restoration projects, along with flood hazard mitigation.
